Lake Powell, Grand Canyon North Rim and Slot Canyons

It is Wednesday October 6th and we were suppose to leave here today.  Right now, there is a severe thunderstorm raging, and the weather report has tornado warnings.  We decided to stay put for another day as the weather report shows everything clearing up.  But oh what beautiful lightning.  My salvation is the wind is not blowing hard.......YET!  I am hoping it will miss this area.

We have managed to have a good time in between weather fronts.  Our first day was nice and we took a great boat ride on Lake Powell.  Lake Powell was created back in the 1960's when Glen Canyon Dam was erected.  The lake has 1986 miles of shoreline  (which is more than the continental west coast) and many wonderful canyons to explore.  The biggest recreational vehicles here are houseboats, and there are a lot of them.     http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery/sharing/shareRedirectSwitchBoard.jsp?token=616537695407%3A1683053246&sourceId=533754321803&cm_mmc=eMail-_-Share-_-Photos-_-Sharee

Toured Glen Canyon Dam and learned this is the beginning of the Grand Canyon right here at the dam.  We also drove 8 miles out of town and by taking a mile walk, were able to get an incredible view of the Colorado River where the river does a horseshoe bend. It was pretty scary as there are NO barriers at the ledge you have to look over to view the river.  The wind came up pretty strong along with some very dark and menacing looking clouds, and not wanting to get blown over the side, everyone made a quick 1 mile hike back to their cars.

Also made it to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and meet up with some friends from Honeyman on Tuesday.  We got there in time to take a short hike and we watched the storm coming across the canyon from the south rim.  During lunch in the lodge, we were treated to another incredible lightning storm and listening to the wind whip though the old windows in the lodge.

But the highlight of our trip so far was yesterday when we toured the slot canyons here in Page.  These are beyond words, and I can only say everyone who comes this way needs to stop and take this tour.  The guide said best time to visit is May, when the light is good and the crowds are not heavy.  We were between storms and it was a bit cloudy with the lighting in the canyon not at it's best, but we managed to still get some good shots of the colors, sculptures of the sandstone and hear the history of how they are created.

The clouds have cleared, the sky is blue again.   We will be on our way to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon tomorrow.
