After 3 days in Key West we headed to the north end of the keys to Key Largo. For those of you who are familiar with the Oregon coast, Key Largo reminds me of Lincon City. Where the city stretches for about 5-10 miles along the coast.
Key Largo is very different from Key West, where the majority of tourist attractions revolve around water sports like scuba, snorkeling, fishing, etc. We could not find an actual town center of Key Largo.
Our days here were spent actually touring areas outside of Key Largo, like Miami Beach, the Everglades and a water park called Theater by the Sea where we saw Dolphins, Sea Lions, and wild bird shows. At the Dolphin show, I got picked to get a kiss from a Dolphin... a fun experience!
The trip to Miami Beach was fun and we flew the kite on the beach and then cruised the entire length of Art Deco, South and North Beaches. It was Spring Break and noon, so it was crowded.
Our trip to the Everglades was wonderful. We saw so many alligators, vultures, crocs and other birds. We took a boat ride out into the estuary of the Everglades and were lucky enough to see a momma and baby manatee.
For those of you who have ever travelled with me, you know how prone I am to bug bites in tropical areas. I had even purchased a product with deet in it for our excursions and never used it. Well, I have to tell you that I did not get one bite, even from Costa Rica, until the last night of our trip in Key Largo where I think we had a third 'person' in bed with us. I ended up with three bites on one leg and of course Deane did not get a one!
This is the end of this leg of our trip and it is back to making our own beds, fixing our own food and drinks, waiting on ourselves and not having a hot tub to relax in each night.
Hope you enjoyed reading about this leg of our trip and our pictures. The next leg is up to the Verdi Valley near Sedona Arizona for a few days, then into Death Valley for 5 days with friends. Then we will be heading back to Beaverton.
